There are a number of reasons to want purifier air products - from asthma to living with a smoker, people buy air purifiers to deal with all kinds of issues. You have to consider what you want an air purifier for in order to know which brand to get. Different brands often work differently to address different products, and there are in fact many different kinds of filters that air purifiers use - some will work differently than others for whatever your problem is.

Odor - Many people get an air purifier because of an odor problem. Pets can be a big source of this, but really there are a wide range of causes - living too close to an industrial plant of some sort, older housing that is afflicted by mold easily, or many other reasons can mean you'll want purifier air. You should look at an ionic air purifier for odor issues - they are generally pretty good about getting the gas particles out of the air, which are the cause of odor problems. Many air purifiers also have filters that put scents into the air - it's really just overwhelming the odor, but it leads to the same result: no more bad smell.
Allergies - For allergies, you'll likely want to go with a purifier air product that has a layered approach. These are usually caused by particles in the air - dust, pollen, etc. - you'll want to get as much of it out as possible, and there are several good brands (such as Oreck) that use multiple different approaches in the same purifier to get rid of them.
Smoke - If you live with a smoker, you should look at getting a purifier air product. Cigarettes put out a lot of pollutants, and the dangers of second-hand smoke aren't worth risking - let alone the smell that smoking causes to linger around the room. An air purifier can't totally get rid of the smell - even the best brands aren't able to deal with the sheer volume of pollutants that a cigar or cigarette produces. It can help, however - if you live with a smoker who refuses to go outdoors, you should get an air purifier for whatever room they're going to be doing it in.
Bacteria - There are also several purifier air brands that are able to deal with bacteria using electricity or other methods - they essentially shock the bacteria to death when they're being filtered through. This is pretty good for if you have someone who is sick or has an immune deficiency for some reason (such as AIDS) - it can at least reduce the volume of bacteria near them. Look for a UV air purifier or an electrical based one - UV air purifiers use light to destroy bacteria, and there are also some ozone based brands (though those are a little more risky health-wise, because an ozone leak could be a serious issue).
