Oreck Super 8 Air Purifiers Review

The Super 8 Oreck Air Purifier is a pretty good product. It's got a permanent filter system, which is a big plus over some other brands - instead of having to get a new filter every once in awhile, you have a filter that you clean and reuse. All it takes is detergent and water, so it's not that big of a hassle, and there is a light that will go off to tell you when you need to clean it. Depending on the size of your house, though, you might need more than one - it will cover about 900 square feet, which is about the size of a large apartment. It doesn't use a HEPA filter, which many people are fanatics about having, so you might want to take that into account. They'll run about $250 or so.

The Good:

A lot of people report that it works wonders for allergies. This probably depends on what you're allergic to - an Oreck Air Purifier is better generally at getting dust and dirt, which will get a lot of the pollen, etc. out of the air. The square footage is also pretty high for this price range - it covers a lot more area than comparable air purifiers. Many of its competitors only get about half as much. They've also got another good feature called a "fragrance tray." Basically, it lets you buy a couple of aroma discs that you can stick in, and it will filter that scent into the air. It also has a "layered" approach to filtering, which is good because it can get at a number of things that will be in the air - including bacteria, because of an electrostatic filter that can kill them.

The Bad:

Like a lot of brands, the Oreck Air Purifier is pretty loud when you have it on the highest setting. For people with severe allergies, you might also want to make sure you're willing to cope with the noise. The cost  is a little higher than other brands that have similar features - but you need to weigh this against the fact that this one can clean more square feet. It's a big point to consider - the bigger the house you have, the more chance you'll need to buy multiple air purifiers.
