HEPA Air Purifier

HEPA Air Purifiers use a specific kind of filtration system inside the air purifier. It's important to remember that it doesn't just have to be one - many air purifier brands use multiple, layered systems to clean out various kinds of pollutants. HEPA is a filter system that is extremely fine in terms of what it can remove - it gets particles as small as .3 microns, which will generally get pollen, mold spores, smoke, and other air pollutants. However, it won't remove most chemicals as the particles are too small - so you might want to make sure that the brand you choose uses multiple systems in order to get rid of everything nasty in the air.

Generally, a HEPA filter (assuming it's of good quality - there are some brands labeled "HEPA" that are junky) will filter about 99.97% of the particles within its filtration range (this means that if they are too small - below the .03 micron level - it can't get them, but above that it gets nearly everything). A lot of people are strong proponents of HEPA - it's a good system, and it's generally good to have a HEPA Air Purifier. However, it's important to try to get one that doesn't just use a single method to clean the air - if you rely on only one thing, you might not be able to get at all the different types of airborne pollutants that can aggravate people. For example, a filtration system like HEPA can do nothing about bacteria, but if you add in a UV system, it will get rid of them as well. The only downside to HEPA systems is that you have to periodically change the filter - it will get much less effective if you don't replace it.
