The first thing you need to do is make sure that the filter you're thinking about is designed to be washed. Read the directions carefully if you've still got them. If it says "HEPA," you probably need to buy a replacement - washing it will just ruin it. If you've lost them and have no other way to tell, you can usually tell by looking at it to see if it looks more like plastic or like paper. If it's papery looking, then don't mess with it - water is only going to ruin it. If it looks like it's made of plastic only, it's probably safe to try to clean it out. You can do it just like washing a dish - get a little warm water in the sink and put some dish soap in. Then just wash it as you would a dish - letting it soak for a few minutes beforehand. I should stress that these are GENERIC instructions for if you've lost your manual, and if you see something different in the packaging or instructions that came with it, go with that.
