One of the biggest reasons people get air purifiers is because of cigarette smoke. If you're concerned about the health of your family and friends, and you're a smoker or live with one, then you should think about an air purifier. I should stress strongly that this is not a solution to the problem - it can only mitigate it. Smoking cigarettes is always going to be damaging to the health of the person who does it - you directly inhale the smoke into your lungs, and the air purifier can't stop that. It can reduce the problem of second-hand smoke for the people around you, but it can't eliminate that entirely either. An air purifier can deal with the odors pretty effectively, and it can cut down on the harmful substances released by tobacco products, but it won't be 100%.

The important thing to remember is that cigarette smoking is
one of the most heavy duty jobs for an air purifier to handle. Air purifier
smoke reduction is much more difficult than dealing with any other pollutant,
because the chemicals are so concentrated and there are simply so many of them
released into the air. For some types of tobacco, such as cigars, it can be
even more difficult. If you're mainly worried about the smell of smoke, then
you should look for a brand with an
odor neutralizer. There are
some that have
plates similar to a Glade plug-in that will scent the air as it goes through
it. If you're worried about health issues, you need to get a higher-end brand,
and you need to encourage the smoker in your family to do it near the air
purifier. If they've got a favorite spot, put it there. If you let them smoke
all over the house, for all but the most expensive brands it's going to be
very hard to get rid of the smell. Air purifiers aren't magic, they will need
time to work. The alternative is to get two or three air purifiers and put one
in every room where there could be smoking.
