Air Purifier Filter
One of the things you have to think about when getting an air purifier is the cost of replacing the filters. An air purifier filter can cost up to a hundred dollars or so (for a high-end HEPA filter), and as low as $10-20 bucks each for the lower end, junkier filters. Some air purifiers don't even have replaceable filters - they just have a permanent one that you can wash over and over again with detergent. When you're buying a replaceable filter, you need to know exactly what brand you have. Check your air purifier for the model information, and make sure that you get the proper kind of filter. Also be aware that many brands have multiple filters inside the machine. This is a cost-saving technique for you, but it can be bad if you get the wrong one. With expensive HEPA filters, it is cheaper to have two filters in the machine - a junky one that you can replace more often and that will do most of the work, and an expensive one that gets the stuff the other one lets through, but doesn't need to be replaced as often because it's not getting clogged up with as much dust.

You should keep in mind that for some filters, replacing it can cost as much as the air purifier itself did initially. If you don't have a big budget to spend, you should look at getting one that doesn't use a replacement filter and that you can repeatedly wash and re-use. You will have to pay a price for this in terms of the effectiveness of the air purifier filter - the most effective ones are obviously the most expensive ones. This is mostly a personal decision - is the cost worth it to you to get rid of more stuff in the air? If you've got health problems or if you're trying to filter out smoke, you'll probably want to go for greater effectiveness. One other option to look at is getting a cheaper air purifier as well as the expensive one - some of them only run $30-50, but the benefit is that the secondary one can reduce the workload on the expensive one. It won't get the smallest particles, but it will get rid of a lot of the big ones, and then you won't have to replace the expensive filter as often.
